Hip-hop mogul Simmons to speak at UAlbany

Hip hop mogul and Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons will speak at the University of Albany

Hip hop mogul and Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons will speak at the University of Albany on Oct. 13.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. in UAlbany’s SEFCU Arena, is part of the World Within Reach Speaker Series and caps off Fallbany Weekend.

Simmons, 54, founded Def Jam Records with Rick Rubin in 1984. Since then, Simmons has developed Rush Communications and Phat Farm, as well as Def Comedy Jam, for which he earned Peabody and Tony awards. He is also known for his activism, recently assisting U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, in his re-election campaign.

Four years ago, UAlbany’s Student Association conceived and organized the World Within Reach Speaker Series, designed to bring world leaders and thinkers to campus. To date, it has featured Basketball Hall of Famer, philanthropist and AIDS spokesman Earvin “Magic” Johnson, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, journalist Barbara Walters, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and political strategist Carl Rove.
