City police are investigating the burglary of a home where it appeared an elderly couple was targeted by individuals posing as contractors.
Officers responded Thursday afternoon to the home on Woodlawn Avenue for a reported burglary. The residents, who are in their 80s, told police a man came to their door Wednesday afternoon, saying he was there to check the water.
The couple let the man inside and he went to the basement. Two others were believed to be involved, with a second man distracting the husband while a third suspect entered the home through the front door and stole jewelry, police said.
Police reminded residents not to allow uninvited repair workers into their homes, ask for identification and contact their company if they say they are there for an inspection. Keep doors locked and call 911 immediately if someone attempts to enter the home, write down descriptions and research companies before hiring.
