Fifth-year senior Jacob Iati scored a career-high 24 points to lift UAlbany over the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 62-59, on Saturday in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Iati made all nine of his free throws in the final three minutes to hold the Kangaroos at bay.

Senior guard Mike Black scored 16 points, including 10 of 12 from the free throw line to help the Great Danes (3-1) to a 23-for-28 (.821) afternoon from the line.

Sophomore forward Sam Rowley had seven points and seven rebounds for UAlbany, which is off to a 3-1 start for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

Estan Tyler led the Kangaroos (1-2) with 17 points and six assists.

Kirk Korver and Nat Rogers each scored in double digits with 16 and 10, respectively.

With five minutes left in the game, Black hit two free throws to give UAlbany its largest lead of the second half at 11, 51-40.

The Kangaroos battled back with an 11-4 run started by a three-pointer from Rogers.

UMKC center Fred Chatmon finished the run with a wide-open dunk to cut the lead to two, 55-53, with 45 seconds left.

UMKC’s Tyler and the Great Danes’ Iati accounted for the final 13 points of the game.

Iati clinched the victory by making two free throws with four seconds left.

UAlbany started the game slowly, trailing the Kangaroos, 25-21, with 3:41 left in the first half.

UMKC led at halftime, 26-23, outrebounding the Great Danes, 19-13, although both teams shot poorly.

The Great Danes got their offense going a little better in the second half, making 10 of 21 shots to finish the game 17-for-42 (40.5 percent).

UAlbany held the Kangaroos to 18-for-52 (34.6 percent) for the game.

The Great Danes won despite just seven assists to 15 turnovers, including four turnovers by Black with no assists.

The Great Danes will face Loyola of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the Springfield bracket championship of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament on at 2 p.m. today at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
