Suicide threat spurs police standoff in Queensbury

One man’s reported suicide attempt led to a six-hour police standoff Sunday.

A man’s reported suicide attempt led to a six-hour police standoff Sunday.

The man called the Warren County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 9 a.m. threatening to kill himself with a knife, according to Sgt. Richard Backus.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Emergency Response Team along with state police responded to the scene at 53 1/2 Main St.

“They tried to negotiate with the man,” Backus said, “but in the end they had to use force.”

Backus confirmed the officers drew their firearms at times.

In mid-afternoon law enforcement made a forceful entry and apprehended the man. He was sent to Glens Falls Hospital for treatment of several superficial, self-inflicted lacerations to the arms.

Backus said the man is sound physically, but will have to undergo psychological treatment.

The street was not closed during the standoff and no officers were hurt.
