Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk was slowly eroding Republican George Amedore's lead in the 46th Senate district as ballot counting in Albany County begins.
Amedore's lead was down to 47 votes before Albany County Board of Elections staff and lawyers for the two campaigns broke for lunch. Today is the first day of counting ballots in this race, where more than 11,000 absentee and affidavit ballots will decide the winner. In total, Tkaczyk has netted seven votes today.
So far about 400 paper votes have been counted in Albany County today. There are still at least 1,500 that need to be reviewed, including votes from Guilderland.
On Tuesday, counting begins in Greene county, and Montgomery county starts on Wednesday.
When oficials broke for lunch today it was not clear whether they would be returning to count at multiple tables. The judge overseeing this process has permitted counting at multiple tables in the afternoon if necessary.
A speedy count is desirable because majority control of the state Senate may rest on the outcome of this race.
