Empire State Plaza ice rink opens Friday

The Empire State Plaza ice rink will open to the public at 11 a.m. Friday.

Those who decide to avoid the mall on Black Friday can hit the ice instead.

The Empire State Plaza ice rink will open to the public at 11 a.m. Friday.

The rink will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting, and skating is always free. Lockers and skate rental will be available on the plaza level adjacent to the rink.

The fee for skate rental is $3 for children under 12 and $4 for adults.

Free skate rentals will be offered each Friday of the season, including opening day, courtesy of Hannaford Supermarkets. Friday evenings will feature family-friendly entertainment, including live music.

A full-service snack bar will be open Friday nights, weekends and school holidays.

Upcoming events at the rink include:

• Sunday, Dec. 2, 1 to 6 p.m.: New York State Holiday Tree Lighting and Fireworks Festival presented by SEFCU. The rink will be closed during the fireworks and will reopen afterwards.
