Siena finally headed back east, and the Saints’ three-point shooting promptly went south.

Whatever progress Siena made from long range in San Diego was nowhere to be found on Sunday, as the Saints missed 24 three-pointers and lost to previously winless Maine, 72-66, at the Alfond Arena.

Siena fell to 2-4 during what appeared to be a section of the schedule with some soft spots, and now must regroup heading into what will be its first home game in 19 days. The Saints play UMass on Wednesday and crosstown rival UAlbany on Saturday.

For the sixth time in six games, senior forward O.D. Anosike had a double-double, with 12 points and 20 rebounds, and Evan Hymes scored 20 points in 29 minutes, but Siena frequently misfired from three-point range and finished 6-for-30 from behind the arc.

Justin Edwards, the leading scorer for the Black Bears (1-4) at 12.0 points per game coming in, nearly equaled that in a 3:35 stretch alone that broke the game open early in the second half.

He scored 11 during a 19-5 run to put Maine ahead, 58-45, with 8:20 left, and finished with 19 points.

The Saints scratched their way back within 62-57 on three-pointers by Rob Poole and Hymes, but the Black Bears were 8-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final three minutes to hold Siena at bay.

The first half was close all the way, and Siena led at halftime, 36-33, on a layup by Anosike with 17 seconds left.

It took Siena almost 81⁄2 minutes to score a basket in the second half, as Hymes hit a three to cut the deficit to 49-43.

By then, Edwards was on a roll.

Two free throws by Hymes cut it to 49-45, but Maine answered with a three by Xavier Pollard, who had 15 points and 12 assists, and Edwards made a jumper and finished a two-on-one break with an alley-oop slam.

Rakeem Brookins made a three with 1:44 left to bring the Saints within 66-60, but Pollard made three of four free throws in the next 40 seconds to give the Black Bears a 69-60 lead with 1:04 left.
