Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk chipped away Monday at the lead built up by Republican Assemblyman George Amedore in their race to represent the 46th Senate District.
About 1,460 absentee and affidavit ballots were counted in Ulster County on Monday, which netted Tkaczyk about 200 votes. The two candidates were neck-and-neck after Election Day, but Amedore built up a 920-vote lead after counting the paper ballots from Albany, Montgomery, Greene and Schenectady counties. Now in the final county of the district, and likely with one day of counting to go, that lead has shrunk to about 720.
Anywhere between 1,800 and 2,400 votes are expected to be counted today.
Regardless of who is on top after Ulster County, the race will likely go to court later in the week to decide on the validity of hundreds of ballots that were laid aside as the result of objections from lawyers for the two candidates.
