Program slated at JCC on city rose garden
SCHENECTADY — The Robert and Dorothy Ludwig Jewish Community Center, 2565 Balltown Road, will host Dave Gade, past president of the Central Park Rose Garden Restoration Committee, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
He will present a talk and slide presentation called “The Schenectady Rose Garden.” The program is part of “The Good Earth” series, sponsored by the JCC and other organizations to highlight the environment and nature.
The program is free and open to the public.
Full moon hike at Moreau Lake
MOREAU — Moreau Lake State Park, 605 Old Saratoga Road, will offer the following programs:
-- A full moon hike is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Join the park naturalist on a full moon hike around Moreau Lake. Participants will learn about the full moon of November and some nightly sounds of the lake.
-- A hibernation hike is slated from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Take an easy stroll through the park and learn about the animals that hibernate through the winter.
-- A Red Oak Ridge hike will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Friday. This moderate hike along the Red Oak Ridge will take participants along some beautiful views and forests.

Owl prowl among Pine Bush events
ALBANY — The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, 195 New Karner Road, has scheduled the following programs:
-- A full moon hike is planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Participants will take a one-mile hike over rolling topography, stopping intermittently for night vision and sound observations.
-- An “Owl Prowl” will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday.
The breeding season for barred owls, great-horned owls and screech owls, residents of the Pine Bush, occurs in midwinter. Participants will take a night hike and learn about the habits of these nocturnal birds and listen for the territorial calls of the male owls.
-- “Winter Preparations” will be offered twice: from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants will learn how animals prepare for the winter by using different strategies, including migration, hibernation and staying active.

Program scheduled on nature wreaths
WILTON — Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park, 80 Scout Road, will offer a family program “Fall Friday Fun Natural Wreaths” at 4 p.m. Friday. Meet at Camp Saratoga Parking Lot 1 on Scout Road.
Participants will be making door wreaths using items from nature.

2 holiday programs at Cornell Extension
SCHENECTADY — Cornell Cooperative Extension Schenectady County has scheduled two programs on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Horticulture Education Center in Central Park.
-- A Holiday Craft class for children and their caregivers will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.
Join staff in making some holiday gifts from the garden. Each person will make and take home a miniature terrarium, two hand-poured herbal soaps and two recycled gifts that grow. Decorative ribbon and labels will also be provided.
The cost is $20 per person, including all materials.
-- A Holiday Table Centerpiece class will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Participants will combine an assortment of fresh flowers, aromatic evergreens, pinecones and candlelight to create a seasonal centerpiece.

Greens Show to open on Friday
GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Garden Club and the Guilderland Historical Society will hold their annual “Open House and Greens Show” from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the historic Mynderse-Frederick House, 451 Main St., Route 146.
The decorations, wreaths and table arrangements throughout the house are made by the garden club members and will be available for purchase. There will also be entertainment and refreshments. Nonperishable donations to the Regional Food Bank will be collected. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to local charities.
Orchid Society schedules auction
COLONIE — The Northeastern NY Orchid Society will hold an auction of over 100 common and unusual varieties of orchids at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the William K. Sanford Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road.
There will be a preview at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to benefit the society.
Alternative holiday wrapping event set
DELMAR — The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, 56 Game Farm Road, will offer a program on alternative holiday wrapping at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Center staff will demonstrate how to reuse everyday recyclables for festive and eco-friendly wrapping. Participants will explore various wrapping materials that are eco-friendly and kid-friendly. Parents and children must accompany each other. This program is free but space is limited.

Holiday Marketplace at Berkshire garden
STOCKBRIDGE, Mass — The Berkshire Botanical Garden, routes 102 and 183, will hold its annual Holiday Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The marketplace will feature wreaths, centerpieces, fresh swags, unique ornaments, baked goods and more.
Admission is free.
Also, the annual Holiday Marketplace cocktail party will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
