A Troy woman previously arrested for allegedly stealing from a Colonie residence earlier this month now faces arson and cruelty to animals charges in connection with a fire at the house.
Khadijah K. Hopkins, 26, of 1324 15th St. allegedly stole a flat screen television, laptop computer, two Playstation consoles and several video games from 96 Elm St. on Nov. 15 before setting the house on fire. A dog was found deceased in a crate at the residence.
With the exception of the television and computer, the stolen items were recovered at the defendant’s residence or a second-hand store in Troy, according to police.
Hopkins was charged with three felony counts of burglary, arson and aggravated cruelty to animals and a misdemeanor charge of petty larceny. She was also arrested on an unrelated warrant for failing to appear on her original arrest for criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Hopkins was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and remanded to Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $30,000 cash or bond bail.
The Maplewood Fire Department, Town of Colonie Department of Fire Services, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Albany County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Department of Financial Services assisted in the investigation.
