A mining company is planning to build a new asphalt plant to replace two old ones in Schoharie County.
Altamont-based Carver Sand & Gravel is applying for permits from the state Department of Environmental Conservation for the project at its Masick Pit mine situated off state Route 30 in Middleburgh.
The DEC is accepting public comment on the permit application up through Dec. 28, according to the Environmental Notice Bulletin.
Details of the building project were not available last week, and Carver Sand & Gravel owner Carver Laraway could not be reached for comment.
There were no permit requests for a project filed in the town of Middleburgh by Thursday, according to the Town Clerk.
The 95-acre Masick Pit mine, where crushed limestone and agricultural lime are produced, includes a processing facility and a lime production facility, according to the DEC.
The development of a new asphalt plant to replace two older ones will likely lead to cleaner operation, according to the DEC.
The application process for the new plant requires mining companies to adhere to federal New Source Performance Standards for asphalt plants as well as New York state requirements related to burning waste oil and monitoring for dust.
DEC Region 4 spokesman Rick Georgeson in an email Thursday said these restrictions lead to cleaner air and greener operation.
“It will be cleaner and more fuel-efficient than the two existing units combined which will result in lower overall air emissions per ton of asphalt produced,” Georgeson said.
The project would not impact the entire facility’s overall emissions cap Georgeson said.
According to the facility’s permit, it is allowed to produce 159,800 pounds each of Oxides of Nitrogen, particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 microns and carbon monoxide annually.
Documents detailing the permit application are not available online.
