Fire destroyed a single-family home this morning and caused traffic on Route 9 near Ushers Road to be rerouted for four hours.

When the blaze at 2042 Route 9 was called in at 8:40 a.m. by neighbors, Jonesville Fire Chief Lou Pasquarell Jr. said flames already were shooting out the windows and firefighters were unable to save the structure, though they carted water on several trucks because there are no hydrants in the area.

“We had fire that was coming through the front of the building and the second floor of the structure,” Pasquarell said.

Two people live in the house and will be staying in another home the family owns, he said. The self-employed owners were working in a detached shop on the property and didn’t realize the house was on fire, he said.

The fire is believed to be accidental but is under investigation, Pasquarell said.

To fight a fire in an area that doesn’t have hydrants, the fire department called in extra manpower, filled tanker trucks at the closest hydrant, drove them back to the scene and emptied the water into portable tanks, to which fire hoses were connected, the chief said.

“Before they had hydrants, that was what they used,” he said of the tanker system.

The lack of hydrants didn’t delay response to the blaze, Pasquarell said, but the fact that the fire was so far advanced when authorities got the call did.

Companies that provided mutual aid to Jonesville Fire Department were Round Lake, Hillcrest, Clifton Park, Ballston Lake, Malta Ridge, Saratoga Springs and Vischer Ferry.

Jonesville crews were at the scene for eight hours. For the first half of that, they closed down a mile-and-a-half stretch of Route 9, detouring traffic on Wood Road, which intersects with Route 9 in two places.
