Gardening/Nature events planned at Moreau State Park, Pine Bush Discovery Center

Porcupines, eagles focus of Moreau outings

MOREAU — Moreau Lake State Park, 605 Old Saratoga Road, will offer the following programs:

-- A “Porcupine Hike” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Participants will learn about the animals’ habits, their environment and more.

-- An easy hike is planned at Potter’s Point from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Participants will examine the coves as well as the flora and fauna and keep an eye out for signs of otters, beaver and other wildlife associated with wet habitat.

-- An eagle survey is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. Moreau Lake State Park is home to wintering bald eagles. Grab a pair of binoculars and join park staff on their weekly bald eagle survey to monitor their population and health. Registration is required.

-- A kids hike is planned from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday. This easy 21⁄2-mile hike for kids, will be fun and educational.

Reservations are required for all the programs. The fee for each program is $2 for adults and children and $1 for seniors. For additional information and to register, call 793-0511.

Pine Bush events welcome winter

ALBANY — The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, 195 New Karner Road, has scheduled the following two programs:

-- A winter solstice night hike will take place from 6:30 to 8 Friday. Participants will take a walk along the trails of the Pine Bush without any light and test their senses at night. They will learn how nocturnal animals use the darkness of night to help them survive. The hike will conclude with some hot cocoa. Dress for the weather.

-- “Welcome Winter” will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Explore the Pine Bush looking for signs of winter and continue on to the Discovery Center to make a variety of winter crafts.
