Why so many tobacco ads near schools?
Just last month, the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition, Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady, and Girls Inc. sponsored a walk around the Mont Pleasant neighborhood of Schenectady to experience firsthand the degree to which young people are inundated by tobacco marketing and promotion.
On a two-block stretch of Crane Street — within a stone’s throw of Hamilton Elementary School and walking distance from the middle and high schools — were a total of seven tobacco retailers.
In the middle of one block (right next door to the community library) was a Family Dollar store — one of 279 Family Dollar stores in New York state that introduced the sale of tobacco products to their stores just this past year. And now Dollar General announces its plans to do the same.
The decision by Family Dollar and Dollar General to sell tobacco products is in direct conflict with a priority goal of tobacco control efforts worldwide to reduce the overall number of tobacco retailers.
There is already one licensed tobacco retailer for every 194 children in New York state. We need fewer — not more — places where youth are exposed to tobacco marketing.
Visit www.seenenoughtobacco.org/ and lend your voice to the growing numbers of New York state residents who agree that “we’ve seen enough!”

It’s time to stop plea bargaining with killers
Why are they letting people who kill other people off so easy? I think they should get life; after all, they took someone else’s life. What about the families of the victims? They have to go through the rest of their life without that loved one.
Taking their licenses away from people isn’t going to stop them from driving. They have to take away their automobile also. A lot of people are out there driving with a suspended license. If a friend lets them use their car, too bad; take that car also. People killing innocent children should get life also. No plea bargaining.
After all, the victims don’t get a chance to plea. I’m tired of reading about innocent children getting killed.
