A mother left two very young children in the car while she was shoplifting at Macy's department store Sunday, police said.
Police were called to the Macy's in Colonie Center at about 4:09 p.m., after it was reported that there was a shoplifter in the store.
Audrea M. Saunders, 25, of Troy, was taken into custody.
Officers at the scene reportedly asked her if she had driven to the mall, and Saunders told them no, despite the fact that she was in possession of car keys.
Suspicious that she may not be telling the truth, officers say they searched the parking lot and found Saunders' car. Inside it was a 3-week-old infant and a 3-year-old child.
According to police, it was determined that the children had been left in the vehicle for well over an hour.
Saunders was charged with two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of petty larceny.
She was sent to the Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 bail.
Child Protective Services was contacted and the children were turned over to relatives.
Saunders will reappear in court Jan. 9.
