Senior captain Drew LeBlanc scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining in the second period Friday night to give the 16th-ranked St. Cloud State men’s hockey team a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference game at the National Hockey & Events Center.
The loss was only the second in the last eight games for the Engineers, who fell to 5-7-4. The Engineers have allowed just 16 goals during the last eight games, in which they’re 4-2-2.
RPI only had four shots on goal in the first period, but took a 1-0 lead when Matt Tinordi scored his second goal of the season at 2:43, off a feed from Marty O’Grady.
But that was the only shot that would get past Huskies’ goalie Ryan Faragher, who had to make just 14 saves to get the victory.
The Huskies (12-8-0) pulled even on a power-play goal by Ben Hanowski midway through the second period, and LeBlanc got the game-winner with just 23 seconds in the period.
LeBlanc corralled a puck in the slot and flipped it over the shoulder of RPI sophomore goalie Scott Diebold.
Rensselaer was then unable to find the equalizing goal in the third period, in which each team managed just in four shots on goal.
The Engineers will return to Houston Field House to host
Sacred Heart in a non-confernece game at 4 Monday afternoon.
