Brody Hoffman stopped 23 shots as Vermont, under former Union coach Kevin Sneddon, edged the Dutchmen, 2-1, in the Catamount Cup Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, Robert Polesello got the Catamounts (5-8-4) on the board with his second goal of the season at 10:35 of the second period. Brett Bruneteau and Mike Montagna earned assists.
Kyle Reynolds gave Vermont a 2-0 advantage about seven minutes later with his second goal. Yvan Pattyn and Chris McCarthy got the assists.
Union’s Greg Coburn made it a one-goal game with his sixth goal of the season, on a power play, at 12:31 of the third period. Mat Bodie and Kyle Bodie earned assists.
Union (8-4-4) continued to apply pressure late in the third period, as Kevin Sullivan nearly jammed a puck past Hoffman with five minutes remaining in the game. With goaltender Troy Grosenick out of the net for an extra attacker in the final minute of regulation, Sullivan had another chance, but fired wide from the slot.
“Honestly, I thought we got outworked tonight,” said Union head coach Rick Bennett. “We could make a lot of excuses, but none of them would be good. We just got outworked tonight.
“When you’re committed, and they were committed tonight, it can create a lot of frustration for a team that’s a little off.”
Grosenick stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Dutchmen.
Union will meet Merrimack at 4 p.m. today, while Vermont takes on Princeton at 7.
