Union College did all of its scoring in the third period Sunday to defeat Merrimack, 4-1, in the consolation game of the Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont.

The win snapped a five-game winless streak (0-2-3) for the Dutchmen, who improved to 9-4-4.

Trailing, 1-0, heading into the third period, junior forward Daniel Carr gave the Dutchmen a big boost with a power-play goal. With Kyle Bigos off for tripping, Carr picked up the rebound of a shot by freshman Matt Wilkins and snapped a wrist shot past Merrimack goalie Rasumus Tirronen at 6:30 to tie the game at 1-1.

That opened the floodgates for the Dutchmen, as sophomore Daniel Ciampini scored what proved to be the game-winning goal by 13:30, and seniors Wayne Simpson and Kyle Bodie added insurance goals in the final 2:20.

“Dan Carr, who is a goal scorer, found the back of the net and it really gave us a spark,” said Union coach Rick Bennett. “It was one of those things where we got that off our backs and we felt we could start to roll. Sometimes, you’ve got to keep battling. It’s not always going to be easy, and I thought our guys fed off that first goal.”

Niskayuna native Colin Stevens made 20 saves to get the victory. He made a number of impressive stops, including stopping a wrist shot by Mike Collins from between the circles in the first period, and covering a deflection by Brian Christie later in the period.

The only goal he let in came at 9:59 of the second period, when Christian got a rebound of a point-blank shot by Bigos and beat Stevens from in close. That goal came just four seconds after Josh Jooris went to the penalty box for interference.
