UFA, Russia -- John Gaudreau had a hat trick, Riley Barber scored twice and the United States beat the Czech Republic 7-0 to reach the semifinals of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship today.

The Americans will play Canada at Ufa Arena on Thursday. Defending champion Sweden will face either Russia or Switzerland in the other semifinal game.

The U.S. played without Union College defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who was suspended Tuesday for his major slashing penalty against Slovakia’s Matus Matis late in the first period of Monday’s 9-3 win.

Alber sidelined

Boston College senior defenseman and Clifton Park native Patch Alber will be out three months after having surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Alber tore the meniscus before Saturday’s game against Alabama-Huntsville in the Mariucci Classic at Minnesota. He suffered the injury during the team’s soccer warmup.

Alber, who started his BC career as a walk-on before becoming a scholarship player last season, has three assists in 14 games this season. In 109 career games, Alber has four goals and 25 assists and has been a part of two NCAA championship teams with BC.

Alber could be back at the end of March, just in time for the NCAA tournament. BC is the defending NCAA champion.
