A good Samaritan thwarted the robbery of a 71-year-old man Wednesday and even aided police in catching the teenage suspect, according to an Albany police release issued today.

Albany police received a phone call around 11:10 a.m. from someone reporting that an elderly man had nearly been robbed in the area of Lark and Lancaster streets. The caller provided dispatchers with a detailed description of the suspect, and told them he had fled north on Lark Street.

Patrol Officer Adam Mantei spotted a teenager who matched the description running in the area of Lark and Spring streets. He stopped the teen — Tryze Miller, 17, of Albany — who was identified as the suspect and brought into custody.

Police learned that Miller had knocked the elderly man to the ground while attempting to steal his wallet. A good Samaritan had gone to the man’s aid, though, interrupting the robbery and calling police.

Miller was charged with second-degree attempted robbery and second-degree assault. He was arraigned in the Albany City Criminal Court and remanded to Albany County Jail on Wednesday.
