It wasn’t a huge run, but it was a significant one for Guilderland, and the streaking Dutchmen held on to beat pesky Colonie, 65-55, for their fifth straight Suburban Council victory Tuesday night.
“That little run was big,” Guilderland coach Ron Osinski said of a 10-2 third-quarter spurt that gave the Dutchmen a 51-38 advantage. “We got our double-digit lead back.”
Six unanswered points to begin the second half had Colonie trailing, 41-36, before Guilderland answered. The Dutchmen (7-2, 8-3) answered again after another push by the Garnet Raiders in the final minutes of the game, and took over sole possession of second place in the league’s South Division.
“They made a run twice in the second half. We persevered again,” said Osinski. “I feel good coming out of this with a win.”
Marc DuMoulin scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half to help stake Guilderland to a 41-30 lead, and Brian Crupi had 17 points, 10 assists and seven steals. Freshman Andrew Platek came off the bench to contribute 14 points and five rebounds.
“He’s a tough competitor. I would say he was the key guy in this game,” Colonie coach Doug Kilmer said of Crupi, a senior guard who had six assists in the first half and five steals in the second. “He fed his teammates. He scored. He played defense. You can tell it means a lot for him to be out on the floor.”
Crupi had three steals and directly factored in the final eight points for Guilderland during its key 10-2 flurry. Jake Samuels sank a free throw, Sonny Benson scored down low and Elias Maisonet nailed a three-pointer to make it 41-36 before Crupi came on.
“Brian is our senior leader. He’s our most experienced guy, and he led us when they made their charge,” Osinski said of the three-year varsity player. “He picked it up. He sparked us.”
“We came out a little lackadaisical in the third quarter. Coach called a timeout and got us fired up,” said Crupi. “He told us we had to play defense, and we picked up our intensity.”
DuMoulin scored on a putback to begin Guilderland’s timely run, and Crupi came up with a steal and fed Vin Simeone for a breakaway layup. After Samuels scored inside for Colonie, Crupi made another steal and ended up scoring on a reverse layup. Simeone set up Crupi for another layup soon after, and one more steal by Crupi and his no-look assist on a Connor Burg hoop made it 51-38.
“He hit shots. He moved the ball,” Benson said of Crupi. “He got his teammates good looks.”
Nolan Smith sank a three-pointer, two free throws and a layup during an 11-4 Colonie run to start the fourth quarter as the Garnet Raiders clawed within 57-52 with 4:05 left.
“We’re always going to keep battling. We’re not going to stop,” said Samuels, who paced Colonie with 16 points and 12 rebounds. “Coach won’t let us.”
Platek scored on a putback to give Guilderland a 59-52 lead and begin an 8-0 run. DuMoulin delivered on a feed from Crupi, Crupi sliced inside for a basket, and the senior guard assisted on a Burg basket to make it 65-52.
“In this league, you’ve got to come out and play hard. If you let down, teams will come back,” said Crupi.
Guilderland extended a 27-25 second-quarter lead with a closing 14-5 run that Platek started with a three and Simeone ended with a three. DuMoulin had a layup and two free throws in the surge to cap his 17-point first half.
Crupi scored 11 points in the first half, and Platek scored eight over the first two quarters. Guilderland never trailed after Platek’s three made it 19-16.
“They were in a zone and he [DeMoulin] was finding openings,” Crupi said of his 6-foot-4 junior teammate. “He finishes pretty good around around the rim.”
DuMoulin pulled down 11 rebounds, and Simeone finished with nine points and six assists. Ryan Nicholson and Maisonet both had nine points for the Garnet Raiders (4-5, 5-6).
“We can’t allow a team to put 41 on us in the first half. We’re not a 70-point team,” said Kilmer. “In the second half we changed defenses and that helped us, but we were facing an uphill climb.”
