Three city fire department lieutenants have been promoted to the rank of captain, Mayor Gary McCarthy announced Thursday.
Gary Coppola, Ronald Baier and Anthony Helstowski are being promoted to take slots left open by retirements.
Coppola joined the department in March 2000, winning the department’s Medal of Merit in 2011. The medal marked rescues carried out at 763 State St., a three-story apartment building, in August 2010 as the officer on a two-man truck crew.
Baier joined the department in September 1990 and was promoted to lieutenant in May 2000. Baier served at ground zero as part of the state Urban Search and Rescue Team after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He continues to train and serve with the team as technical team manager. He has also received the department’s merit award and several commendations.
Helstowski joined the department in 2001 and is currently assigned to Engine 4, Platoon 2. He is an active member of the U.S. Air National Guard at Stratton Air Base and was deployed to Iraq with his unit in 2010. With his military training, he has also trained department members of the department’s tactical medical unit. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2006. He has twice won the department’s Medal of Merit.
