Shelby Schneider, director of marketing and economic development specialist at the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation, has received a national “40 Under 40” award for her work.

The recognition for accomplished economic development professionals under age 40 came from Development Counselors International, a New York City-based firm that specializes in economic development marketing.

“The people chosen by the selection committee represent a bright future for the economic development world,” said Andy Levine, president of DCI.

Schneider spearheads SEDC’s efforts to promote Saratoga County through social media, using Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to spread word around the world about high-tech development opportunities in the county.

“Nationally, we have been ahead of the curve [on social media],” Schneider said Monday. “I’m not sure why. It’s great free promotion.”

“She does a great job at it,” said SEDC President Dennis Brobston. “The marketing end of what she does has been really important for us.”

SEDC is a private nonprofit organization that promotes economic development in the county, receiving part of its funding through the county.

“It is an honor to have such a well-respected, national organization recognize one of our own,” Brobston said. “It also shines a positive light on the strength of organization and the impact that Saratoga County has had in the field of economic development.”

Schneider, a native of Tribes Hill and graduate of Skidmore College, has worked for SEDC since 2000, when she was hired to handle the ramp-up and then administration of Saratoga County’s Empire Zone Program. She administered the Empire Zone program until it expired in 2010.

Schneider is also part of the team that has marketed the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta and Stillwater to the global semiconductor industry — efforts that succeeded in attracting what is today GlobalFoundries Fab 8.

Schneider, 38, sold real estate with her mother’s real estate firm in Montgomery County before attending college. She said watching that area’s economic decline got her interested in how new economic activity could be generated.

“I grew up watching the steady economic decline and wanting to do something altruistic if I stayed in upstate New York,” she said. “I’ve just always been really passionate about community.”

Schneider is married and the mother of four.

The “40 Under 40” winners were announced Sunday during the International Economic Development Council Leadership Summit in Orlando, Fla.
