A new medical center could be coming to the area of Geyser Road designated for development as a “town center” for Milton.

Saratoga Hospital will be providing at least some of the services anticipated at the planned Milton Medical Center on Geyser Road, across from Town Hall.

“Some time ago, leadership of the town asked us to look at the town as a site for a primary care center, and we have reviewed it and are proceeding with that project,” said hospital spokeswoman Ellen Kerness.

The process is only beginning, she said, and there’s not yet a timetable for when people might be able to see doctors there.

The town Planning Board in December approved the two-story, 10,000-square-foot primary care center, which will be built on land on the north side of Geyser Road between a miniature golf course and the Milton Eagles fire station. It is part of the Old Mill Town planned development district, where the Hannaford supermarket and Allerdice Hardware are the anchor tenants.

“As far as the town is concerned, we’re very interested,” said town Supervisor Dan Lewza. “I think it’s a great catalyst for what we want to have in the town center.”

The building is going to be built by Old Milltown owners Boghosian Brothers, with the hospital leasing at least half the building, said town Building Inspector Wayne Howe. Sidewalks and streetscape improvements are part the project, he said.

Saratoga Hospital has been expanding beyond the traditional hospital grounds in recent years, opening medical arts centers in Wilton and Malta. It is building a major new urgent care center in Malta that is scheduled to open in May.

Milton officials want to develop a town center in the area around the intersection of Geyser Road and Rowland Street.

Plans for the area include construction of sidewalks, with lighting and other improvements, on both sides of Geyser Road east of the intersection.

In addition, recreation facilities are being planned for 8.5 acres of town-owned land on Rowland Street, north of the existing commercial development area. Plans include developing off-road pedestrian-bicycle connections between the town complex and the new park.

Another project will develop a new “kiddy-land” and other new facilities at the Burgess-Kimball Park south of Town Hall.

Work on the first section of sidewalk, on the north side of Geyser Road, is scheduled to start this year, but the overall project will last into 2014.

The sidewalks are being paid for with a $1 million federal grant obtained in 2006 through then-Congressman John Sweeney. Lewza said the town will need to put up about $500,000 over the next two years toward its share of the sidewalk project.
