Final judgment on the agreement reportedly in the works to open a Ronald McDonald-type boarding house for families of patients at Sunnyview and Ellis hospitals must be withheld until the location is disclosed, but what is known at this point appears to be quite promising.
Location is all-important in this case, and that of the targeted house remains confidential as negotiations for its purchase are finalized. But the house is apparently not in a historic district, which was an issue with a previous house targeted by the Jack’s Place foundation; and it is within 150 feet of the hospitals. So it will be ideal for people who want to spend time with hospitalized family members without having to spend a bundle on hotels and meals, and it will be near enough for them to walk to go see them. In other words, it will fulfill the mission of a medical hospitality house.
Still... it seems unlikely that the targeted house will be as big as the one in the GE Realty Plot that the Jack’s Place foundation sought last year (and that we had no problem with), or that it will have as much parking. In fact, it’s hard to imagine a single house in the area (reported as having eight bedrooms and being “off Rosa Road”) that’s not in the GE Plot yet still has ample room for eight cars. So the jury is still out on whether parking will be an issue and how it will be resolved.
But assuming there’s no parking problem, the City Council should go ahead and approve the very limited legislation for a zoning change that would permit medical hospitality houses within 150 of hospitals, provided they are not in historic neighborhoods.
