Japanese steakhouse, nail salon sign leases for ShopRite Square

Two new tenants have signed leases to occupy space at Niskayuna’s ShopRite Square, according to town

Two new tenants have signed leases to occupy space in Niskayuna’s ShopRite Square, according to town and county officials.

One tenant will be a Japanese-style steakhouse, Sakura Hibachi, offering sushi and hibachi, while the second tenant, Splash Nails, is a nail salon. In addition, a food-related tenant is negotiating a lease for 1,800 square feet in the plaza.

The shopping plaza at the corner of Nott Street and Balltown Road has undergone major redevelopment in recent years and continues to be eyed for further work. The Niskayuna Town Board will soon schedule a public hearing on a special-use permit needed to move forward with the latest developments.

The former Friendly’s restaurant will be torn down late next month to make room for a new, 1,750-square-foot building facing Nott Street East. The Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency is providing a $35,000 grant toward demolition costs.

Last summer, The Daily Gazette reported the Friendly’s building would likely come down so IMCC St. James LLC, an Illinois holding company, could buy the land and make space for more parking, better traffic flow and more visibility. IMCC now owns the front portion of the plaza and is already in talks with several tenants about leasing the new building once it goes up.

“We are pleased to work with the town of Niskayuna and Schenectady County to continue the successful redevelopment of ShopRite Square,” IMCC President Art Rendak said in a news release.

Town Supervisor Joe Landry said in a news release that the recent developments and new tenants are part of the continuing transformation of the site.

“I am very grateful to IMCC St. James, LLC for their commitment to continue to invest in and help us bring new tenants to this rebounding retail plaza in the heart of Niskayuna,” he said.

In recent months, a new TCBY Yogurt, Best Cleaners and Giant Discount Wine and Liquor have also signed leases and opened in the plaza.
