Rush hour will come with a heavy side order of snow today, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow falling lightly now should speed up significantly after 3 p.m. or 4 p.m., meteorologist Kevin Lipton said. It will fall heavily throughout the evening and overnight, tapering off in the morning. By noon Saturday, the snow should stop.

In total, the Schenectady area will likely get 10 to 14 inches of snow, he predicted. But it won’t be the wet, heavy snow that hit the area after Christmas.

“It should be more of a powdery snow,” he said. “Not the fluffiest, but a little bit fluffier than last time.”

In anticipation of the storm, school districts around the area closed today, as did many nursery schools and pre-schools.
