Desi Washington scored 24 points, and Saint Peter’s overcame a seven-point halftime deficit with clutch free-throw shooting to defeat Siena, 72-62, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Sunday.

The Peacocks (8-16, 3-11 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) snapped a two-game skid, and split the season series with the Saints, who won, 66-53, on Jan. 13.

Siena (6-19, 4-10) dropped into a tie for eighth place with Marist, just a game up on the Peacocks with four league games left.

Saint Peter’s was 17-for-21 from the line in the second half, with Washington 10-for-10.

The Peacocks also shut down Siena’s leading scorer O.D. Anosike, who had just two points and seven rebounds in the second half to finish with 18 points and 16 boards.

Anosike grabbed his 1,000th career rebound in the first half, becoming the third Saint and ninth MAAC player to reach that benchmark.

“We just couldn’t make shots,” Anosike said. “It’s frustrating.”

Siena’s senior star had 16 points and nine rebounds at halftime, helping the Saints to a 39-32 lead at the break. He grabbed his milestone rebound with 10:04 to play in the first half.

Anosike became just the third active Division I player to join the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound club, joining Oregon’s Arsalan Kazemi and Fordham’s Chris Gaston.

The second half was a different story.

Saint Peter’s scored eight of the first 10 points after intermission to get back in the game, and they switched to a zone defense that smothered Anosike and the Saints.

“We just haven’t figured out a way to win a close game on the road,” Saints coach Mitch Buonaguro said.

Siena has lost 17 of its last 19 MAAC road games, dating back to the end of the 2010-11 season.

The Saints return to action Thursday night at Fairfield in a game that tips at 8:30, and will be nationally televised on ESPN3.
