The timing couldn’t have been better.

Niskayuna senior Phillip Weeber came up with his first victory of the season in the biggest race of the year Tuesday, winning the Section II Alpine giant slalom at Gore Mountain.

Weeber, who had finished second on a number of occasions at invitationals during the regular season, finished his run in 1:13.38, finishing .55 seconds ahead of Kieran Mottau of Saratoga Springs, who came into the event as one of the prerace favorites.

While Weeber was recording his first win of the year, Shenendehowa freshman Julia Smith continued her dominance of the girls’ division, winning both the slalom (41.42) and giant slalom (1:16.00) to lead the Lady Plainsmen to the team championship.

Mike Merecki of Christian Brothers Academy won the boys’ slalom, and Queensbury took home the boys’ team trophy.

Smith, who won her scholastic debut as an eighth-grader, turned in an amazing performance in giant slalom, finishing over three seconds ahead of runnerup Alex MacAffer of Albany Academy, who was second in 1:19.15, edging Katie Zilka of Queensbury (1:19.33).

The Lady Plainsmen also got strong efforts from sophomore Kristen Kruk (third in slalom, seventh in giant slalom) and senior Courtney Scriven (fifth giant slalom, 10th slalom) to finish with 27 points. Queensbury and Saratoga Springs tied for second with 51.

Merecki, who also finished third in giant slalom, fell during his

slalom run at sectionals last season but had no trouble Tuesday. He completed his run in 40.56, leaving another Niskayuna skier, Ned Feist, to settle for second (41.44).

Alex Hohman tied for third in giant slalom and finished fifth in slalom to lead Queensbury to the boys’ team championship with 54.5 points. Saratoga Springs was second with 69.
