A family and their five pets all escaped safely from their burning home early Sunday morning, according to Schenectady police.
A report of a structure fire brought officers to 2092 Foster Ave. at approximately 1:30 a.m.
When they arrived, the front of the house was reportedly in flames.
Officers say they located a resident who said the family had made it out safely, but that their three dogs and two birds were still stuck inside the burning building.
Approximately six officers entered the residence in an attempt to save the pets. Police say they were all found and safely removed.
According to police, an officer was bit on the hand by one of the dogs. He was treated at Ellis Hospital for his injuries.
