A single-family home in the town of Florida is in ruins after a fire early Monday.

Florida Fire Chief Steven Anderson said by the time his crew could respond to the 6:30 a.m. 911 call, the house on the corner of Langley and Belldons roads was engulfed in flames.

“It was a total loss,” he said, adding that it was a bad day for a house to catch fire: The high winds spread the flames through the home like a bellows and low temperatures slowed the firefighters.

“A lot of our stuff was freezing up,” he said, “one of the trucks and the valves on our water tankers.”

In the end, the fire crews had to just arch water onto the building from the outside rather than entering to pinpoint the source.

By 9 a.m. the fire was under control.

Anderson couldn’t name the homeowners but said the father and son who lived in the house were relatively unscathed. “One had a sprained ankle and one had a very small burn, but they refused medical attention, so it must not have been too bad.”

The cause of the blaze will likely never be determined.

“It was too far gone,” he said, “Plus there were wood stoves in the house. It really could have been anything.”
