The grandmother of an 8-year-old boy who died Saturday at Ellis Hospital was charged Sunday with first-degree manslaughter following an autopsy.
The boy, identified by police as Sha’hiim Nelligan, was found unresponsive by family members in their 23 Mynderse St. home Saturday morning. They called the police shortly after 10 a.m.
He was treated on the scene by members of the Schenectady Fire Department and transported to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
After an autopsy on Sunday, “the condition of the body suggested homicide,” said Lt. Mark McCracken.
Gloria Nelligan, 43, of 23 Mynderse Ave., Sha’hiim’s grandmother and legal guardian, was arrested by Schenectady police and charged with one count of first-degree manslaughter, a class B felony.
McCracken said she is being held by police for arraignment this morning, but could not release any further information.
The residence is being held as a crime scene as members of the Youth Aid Bureau and the Evidence Collection Unit continue their investigation.
Schenectady police cited Det. J. Hotaling, the lead detective, as well as members of the Child Protective Services for their involvement in the case.
