Trucker assaulted after hitting, killing pedestrian

A 28-year-old Schenectady man died when a U.S. Postal Service worker driving tractor-trailer struck

A 28-year-old Schenectady man died when a U.S. Postal Service worker driving tractor-trailer struck him early this morning in Colonie, and the truck driver was subsequently assaulted.

William A. Jennings was in the road when the truck hit him around 3:30 a.m. on Central Avenue near the intersection of Lombard Street, according to Colonie police. When the driver got out of the truck to check on Jennings, he was attacked in the road by an unknown person or people, according to police.

Jennings was pronounced dead at the scene by the Albany County coroner. Meanwhile, the driver, a 48-year-old man whom police have not identified, was taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Members of the Colonie police Traffic Safety Unit are investigating the accident, and are asking anyone with information or who might have been a witness to call the department at 783-2744.
