Engineers finish season strong, beat Saints, 4-1

Brock Higgs scored his first goal of the season on a short-handed shift to provide the Rensselaer Polytechnic men with the eventual game winner in Saturday’s regular-season finale, a 4-1 victory over St. Lawrence.

The Engineers (12-7-3 ECAC Hockey, 17-12-5 overall) will be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, receiving a first-round bye.

Nick Bailen set up the winner for RPI. He finished with a goal and a pair of helpers.

The Saints (9-9-4, 16-14-4) drew even on Greg Carey’s 26th tally of the season, coming at 13:46 of the second period on a four-on-three power play.

After both teams had gotten one player back from the penalty box, Higgs found the net. Travis Fulton and Johnny Rogic scored in the third period.

Jason Kasdorf made 19 saves on 20 shots for the Engineers, improving to 13-3-2 on the season. St. Lawrence netminder Matt Weninger stopped 29 of 33 shots.

POTSDAM — Jamie Lee Rattray’s two goals in the second period gave Clarkson a 3-0 lead, and the No. 5 Golden Knights (28-8-0) held on to eliminate the Engineers from the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.

Erica Howe made 17 saves on 19 shots for Clarkson. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute got 29 saves on 33 shots from Kelly O’Brien.

Lauren Wash scored her seventh goal of the season at 10:43 of the third to pull the Engineers (10-22-4) within two goals at 3-1.

RPI’s Katie Daniels scored a short-handed goal at 19:48.
