PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Former Catholic Central High School of Troy slugger Joe Mahoney wears a tattoo of the Irish flag on his upper back. Maybe with St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, he's drawing strength from his Irish roots.

Mahoney belted two home runs Saturday in the Miami Marlins' 8-8 tie with the New York Mets in a spring training game.

Mahoney, who was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles this offseason, impressed Marlins manager Mike Redmond with his power outburst.

“He’s got a lot of pop,” Redmond told the Palm Beach Post. “He can make any ballpark look small. There’s a job open at first base and he’s making a strong case.”

The 6-foot-6 Mahoney was a sixth-round draft choice by Baltimore in 2007 but he played in just two big-league games, spending the last six seasons accumulating 2,298 at bats in the minors and hitting 63 home runs, according to the Post. Read the full story here.

He starred at the University of Richmond after his high school career.

Meanwhile, Schenectady's Casper Wells is hoping to improve on a sluggish start to the spring training campaign. Wells has just two hits -- a homer and a double -- in 18 plate appearances for the Seattle Mariners. He has appeared in 6 games.

In high school, Mahoney and Wells both played in the Big 10 conference, Wells for Schenectady High School and Mahoney for the Crusaders. At age 28, Wells is two years older than Mahoney.
