A Watervliet man was arrested today for allegedly attempting to rob the Trustco bank on State Street.
Robert L. Costello, 31, is accused of entering the bank at 3641 State St. just after 1 p.m. with his face covered with a towel and handing the teller a note demanding money. He did not display a weapon or imply that he had one, according to a news release from the Niskayuna Police Department.
Costello then left without any money and fled on foot toward Albany Street, police said. No one was injured during the incident.
An off-duty Schenectady police officer was in the area of State Street and Balltown Road when he noticed a man running from the bank. The officer followed the man to an address on Winston Place. Once there, the off-duty officer called police and gave a description of the suspect and the house that he entered, according to a Schenectady Police Department news release.
When police arrived, the suspect attempted to flee from the rear of the residence and ran into other officers who were waiting for him.
Costello was charged with third-degree attempted robbery and fourth-degree attempted grand larceny, both felonies. He was arraigned in Niskayuna Town Court before Justice Paul Zonderman and sent to the Schenectady County Jail without bail.
