Firefighters remain on the scene of a brush fire in Washington County that has spread to a storage area for used tires.
An official at the Argyle Fire Department says that the fire is still burning this morning near the intersection of Route 197 and Route 44. Fire crews and state Department of Environmental Conservation employees are at the scene.
The fire began as a brush fire Sunday, when high winds helped spread fires at homes and fields in several upstate communities. The Argyle blaze spread to an area where used tires are stored. The fire official said crews are likely to remain at the scene throughout the afternoon and plans are to encircle the fire to contain it and eventually put it out completely.
The Washington County Department of Public Safety has issued an advisory about smoke, warning that burning tires can produce toxic smoke.
