Albany police’s animal control officer seized two vicious dogs that killed two smaller canines on Tuesday, police said.

The incident happened at about 4:20 p.m. The owner of the small dogs told police that he was walking his two dogs in the alley, when two larger dogs broke through the rear fence of a home on Clinton Avenue and mauled his dogs. Both of the victim’s dogs were severely injured and died at the scene.

The dogs’ owner was not injured during the incident.

The large dogs, an English Bullmastiff and a Presa Canario, were seized at the scene and transported to The Hudson River Humane Society pending a 10-day quarantine period. Their owner, 42-year-old James Garland of Albany, was cited for having a vicious dog, dog that is harassing other dogs, having a loose dog and for not having his dog licensed, vaccinated and properly identified.

He is scheduled to appear in Albany City Civil Court at a later date.
