A Troy company plans to install 26 electric vehicle charging stations around Schenectady County, from the public library downtown to Schenectady County Community College, among other popular locales.
Access Technology Integration Inc., a company that installs automated parking systems, gates, booths and security cameras, will fund the project with a $267,000 award from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
The stations will also be installed at City Hall, the Glendale Nursing Home in Glenville, parking garages and surface parking lots.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that more than 360 electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid charging stations will be installed across the state as part of his Charge NY initiative, which has been led by NYSERDA and the New York Power Authority.
The goal is to create a statewide network of as many as 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years to serve up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road.
Some organizations plan to install charging stations at various locations across the state, while others plan to install them in and around the towns and cities where they are located. PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay Division will install 10 stations for fleet vehicles at its Albany distribution center.
“Building this network of innovative charging stations will encourage New Yorkers to use fuel-efficient alternatives like electric vehicles, as well as grow the green industry and jobs in the state,” Cuomo said in a news release. “The Charge NY program shows how New York is leading the way toward an electric vehicle future, and it is helping to drive the state’s clean energy economy.”
Thursday’s award was part of $3.6 million awarded by NYSERDA to 14 organizations to install more than 260 electric vehicle charging stations across the state. Most stations will be dual charging stations, able to accommodate two vehicles at once.
Last June, NYSERDA awarded $4.4 million to fund 325 charging stations around the state.
NYPA issued a request for proposals Thursday for the installation of 100 charging stations equipped with smart charging capabilities that would reduce the demand on the electric grid during peak demand times.
