An attack on a uniformed U.S. Army captain Thursday in a Wal-Mart checkout line has a Schenectady man facing a hate crime charge.
Yiqiang Wu, 47, of Schenectady, is accused of punching the captain in the Wal-Mart store on Washington Avenue Extension about 6 p.m.
The captain, who was not identified by Albany police, told officers the man behind him in line, Wu, began to make derogatory statements to him about the United States and the captain’s military service. Police said Wu then followed after the captain as he tried to leave the store and struck him several times in the face.
The captain sustained bruises to his face and a cut over one eye. He was treated at the scene by fire department personnel.
The incident was captured on a store surveillance camera, and Wu was arrested at the scene. He was charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime, arraigned this morning in Albany Criminal Court and released on $5,000 bail.
