A Skidmore College student involved in a high-profile fight two years ago has been charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing an expensive set of pool cues from a taxi Friday.

City police arrested Justin J. Tavarez, 22, of the Bronx, Friday morning for allegedly not paying Saratoga Taxi for a $23.80 fare and then removing a black leather case containing $1,150 worth of pool equipment from the cab. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Saratoga Springs City Court and was released on bail.

In December 2011, Tavarez was initially charged with felony assault and committing a hate crime for hitting and kicking a man at Compton’s Restaurant on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Tavarez and three other Skidmore students assaulted Christopher McCarthy, 40, of Saratoga Springs, breaking a dinner plate over his head, police said.

Tavarez pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and agreed to pay restitution to the victim. He also was ordered to comply with a list of sanctions imposed by a college disciplinary panel.
