The 88-year-old driver who struck and killed a fellow parishioner after Good Friday services last month has been issued two traffic tickets.

Maria Rubonis of Niskayuna was charged by Niskayuna police with failure to use due care related to a pedestrian and failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Both are traffic infractions.

Niskayuna police held off on issuing any tickets until their investigation of the March 29 accident was done. The tickets were issued April 2.

Killed in the accident was Gary Amell, 70, of Schenectady. He was struck just before 1 p.m. Good Friday as he crossed Union Street in a crosswalk in front of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church.

Both Amell and Rubonis had just attended the noon Good Friday service. Rubonis struck Amell as she turned left from the church parking lot.

Witnesses called police and performed CPR on Amell until paramedics arrived. He was then taken by members of Niskayuna Fire District 1 to Albany Medical Center, where he died.

Rubonis was not injured.
