A Poughkeepsie man was accused Tuesday of stealing a diamond from the Northeastern Fine Jewelry store on Western Avenue in Guilderland earlier in the day.

Guilderland police said in a news release that Jonathan Higgs, 43, entered the store and had a clerk show him a diamond. He then walked out of the store with a 3-karat loose diamond and platinum setting, valued at almost $40,000, police said, and jumped into a white vehicle being driven by an accomplice.

Higgs was captured shortly after with the help of a witness. The stolen items were not recovered when he was taken into custody, and the accomplice was not captured. Witnesses gave varied descriptions of the accomplice.

Higgs was charged with third-degree grand larceny and arraigned in Guilderland Town Court.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Guilderland police at 356-1501.
