The Saratoga Springs City Council on Tuesday approved 14 projects to be funded through this year’s Community Development Block Grant.
A total of $336,320 in 2013 federal funding is expected from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, about $10,000 less than last year’s grant and in the same range as the 2011 HUD block grant entitlement funding. In 2010, the city received more than $400,000 in block grant money, according to city officials.
A 12-member Community Development Citizen Advisory Committee, which recommended the projects for funding, held two public hearings and had extensive discussions about the projects during two committee meetings, according to Bradley Birge, the city’s planning and economic development administrator.
The 2013 block grant projects approved include:
• $10,000 for a full-time shelter counselor for the Domestic Violence/Rape Crisis Center.
• $10,000 for one-on-one, small group and classroom literacy tutoring for the Literacy NY Greater Capital Region Adult Literacy Tutoring program.
• $10,000 for a part-time senior advocate at the Saratoga Senior Citizen Center.
• $8,000 for the Legal Aid Society’s Homelessness Prevention Project.
• $6,000 for the Saratoga Mentoring Program, a project of Catholic Charities.
• $1,000 for the Saratoga Sponsor-A-Scholar program.
• $110,000 for the Community Health Resource Center of Saratoga Hospital at 24 Hamilton St.
• $41,500 for the Saratoga Affordable Housing Group’s rehabilitation of apartments on Allen Drive. The money will pay for energy-efficient window replacements for eight units in two buildings of affordable housing.
• $28,820 to the city Department of Public Works for new flooring and divider door replacements at the Saratoga Senior Citizen Center.
• $15,000 to the city Department of Public Works for the repair of curbs and sidewalks in eligible areas of the city.
• $12,000 for the rehabilitation of the Frederick Allen Lodge at 69 Beekman St. to complete a final phase of work on the structure, which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
• $10,000 for the Rebuilding Together Rehabilitation Project.
• $9,000 for the Mother Susan Anderson Emergency Shelter Rehabilitation Project for an emergency shelter serving woman and children.
• $65,000 for administration of the city’s community development program administration. This is an annual payment to finance the local community development program’s budget, including payroll, fringe benefits and program and office expenses.
