A Gloversville man charged with assaulting and robbing Johnstown murder victim Brian Morrison before he was found dead in 2010 was sentenced to prison time in Fulton County Court on Monday.

Derrick Paul, 30, of County Highway 146, was sentenced to seven years in state prison on a second-degree assault charge, according to the office of Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira.

Paul was also sentenced to 11⁄3 to 4 years on a charge of tampering with physical evidence, prison time that will run concurrently with the assault sentence.

Paul entered guilty pleas to the charges in March.

He is among several people charged during the still-ongoing investigation into who killed Morrison, 42, who was found dead of a stab wound on Bleecker Street early July 7, 2010. Paul admitted to striking Morrison and rendering him unconscious before stealing his wallet. But he was not charged with actually killing Morrison, and police are still seeking his killer.

Sira in a news release said the homicide investigation remains a “top priority.” Anybody with information is urged to contact Gloversville Police Detectives at 773-4514 or the Fulton County Anonymous Crime Tips Hotline at 736-5561.
