Baseball: Guilderland locks up spot in sectionals

Guilderland put together a pair of five-run innings and beat Colonie in a Suburban Council baseball

Guilderland put together a pair of five-run innings and beat Colonie in a Suburban Council baseball game, 13-3, Friday, to clinch a spot in the Section II Class AA tournament.

Guilderland (8-8, 9-11) needed to win its final three games and did so, beating Mohonasen Monday and Averill Park Wednesday before freshman Matt Pierce went the distance in containing Colonie.

Pierce gave up nine hits, while Lewis Lima had a double and single for the Dutchmen, and Jacob Sturn added a pair of singles. Ben Contento homered for Colonie (6-10, 8-11).

Codey Piel pitched two-hit ball over six innings, and Ryan Puentes had two singles and an RBI as SC South Division champion Columbia beat Bethlehem, 3-1.

Tyler Casavant had a pair of singles for the Blue Devils (15-1, 17-2), and Kevin Smith picked up the save. Pat Curran had an RBI double for the Eagles (11-5, 15-5).

Dylan Angelo pitched no-hit ball over four innings and gave up an unearned run, and Amsterdam earned a Big 10 two-game split with Schenectady (10-6, 11-7) by winning, 4-1.

Angelo finished with a two-hitter, struck out 10 and walked one. Dan Renwick had two singles and an RBI for the Rams (9-7, 11-8).

J.T. Sawyer knocked in eight runs with two doubles and two singles, and Hoosic Valley earned a share of the Wasaren League championship by beating Stillwater, 19-3.

Hoosic Valley and Greenwich both finished 12-2 in the league. John Rooney had three singes for Hoosic Valley (18-2 overall).

Stillwater (7-7, 9-8) led early, 3-0, before Sawyer and two relievers joined for six shutout innings.

Freshman Brad Smith hurled a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and Dylan Klock hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth and later scored on an error as St. Johnsville (8-11) beat Heatly, 3-1, in a non-league game.

Nate Miller had three hits for Heatly, including a double.

Anthony Villano went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kaleb Goodrich also went 2-for-4, and four Corinth pitchers joined on a two-hitter as the Tomahawks (14-5) downed Warrensburg, 4-2.

Zak Shaw had three hits and two RBI, and Patrick Hart fanned eight in Fonda-Fultonville’s 13-8 non-league win at Gloversville. Chris Rockefeller had two hits and two RBI for Gloversville
