The unseeded Guilderland doubles team of Bill Dong and Michael Zhu continued its incredible run through the Section II individual tennis championships Tuesday in Central Park.
Dong and Zhu knocked off another unseeded team — Justin Hsu and Russell Santos of Niskayuna — 6-4, 7-5, in the quarterfinals, and then pulled another upset in the semifinals, eliminating fourth-seeded Mat DeSantis and Jimmy Merrill of Columbia, 6-4, 6-2.
Dong and Zhu set up an all Guilderland final, as they will face schoolmates Erick Kopff and Alex Federov in the finals, scheduled to be played at 3 this afternoon in Central Park. Kopff and Federov are seeded second.
The seeds held up in the singles, as No. 1 Rohin Bose of Bethlehem and No. 2 Lars Olson of Doane Stewart advanced to today’s championship match, Bose, a six-year varsity player who finished third in the individual sectionals last year, took out No. 4 Ben Spoor of Ballston Spa, 6-2, 7-5, in the semifinals, while Olson defeated No. 3 Michael Haelen of Albany Academy, 7-5, 6-0.
