Sixteen state parks and historic sites in the Saratoga/Capital District Region will host 50 all new geocaches as part of the second annual Geocache Challenge starting this weekend .
To complete the challenge, participants must find 35 of the 50 geocaches by Veterans Day.
Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which participants use a global positioning system (GPS) or alternative mobile device and basic navigational techniques to find hidden outdoor containers, called geocaches.
Usually small and waterproof, the geocaches typically contain a logbook, stamp, and small items for trading. The state park geocaches will also have stickers, small prizes, and/or other items related to the host park or site for participants to keep. Some of the parks are also offering bonus prizes.
For newcomers, some state parks will host Learn to Geocache workshops. Geocache passports can be picked up at the office of any participating park or site, or downloaded from the agency's website at www.nysparks.com. GPS coordinates for the State Park geocaches can be found at www.geocaching.com.
