Man convicted in 2010 Compton's diner assault admits to thefts

A 22-year-old man who as a Skidmore student assaulted a man at Compton’s Restaurant admitted Tuesday

A 22-year-old man who as a Skidmore student assaulted a man at Compton’s Restaurant admitted Tuesday that he stole pool cues and stiffed a cab driver in a separate incident last month.

Justin Tavarez, of the Bronx and of Saratoga Springs, pleaded guilty in Saratoga Springs City Court to petty larceny and theft of services, both misdemeanors.

Tavarez stole pool cues that another passenger had left in a taxicab on April 12 in Saratoga Springs and left without paying his $23.80 fare, authorities said.

Prosecutors expect Tavarez to be sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of probationary supervision.

In December 2010, Tavarez smashed a plate over a 42-year-old man’s head in an early morning fight at the Broadway restaurant. He originally was charged with a hate crime, but that charge was dropped, and he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault.
