Baseball: Failing, Nemecek carry Hilltoppers back to Class C final

Marcus Failing scattered four hits, and Dakota Nemecek doubled home the tie-breaking run in the fifth inning as Fort Plain edged Hoosic Valley, 2-1, in a Section II Class C semifinal game Tuesday at Shuttleworth Park.

Failing doubled before scoring on Trent Douglas’ fourth-inning single, and struck out eight as part of his ninth win without a loss. The senior stranded two runners in the seventh, getting a strikeout and a groundout to end it.

Frank Acker singled in the Hoosic Valley (No. 5 seed, 20-3) fifth to end Failing’s no-hit bid, and scored on a single by Sean McLaughlin. Joey Ray doubled in the Fort Plain fifth and scored on Nemecek’s double.

Fort Plain (No. 1, 19-2), which has won six Class C titles since 2004, will take on defending champion Voorheesville (No. 10, 16-7) in Thursday’s final at 7 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The Blackbirds scored all of their runs with two outs in a 4-3 comeback win over Stillwater (No. 14, 11-9).

Mike Young hit an RBI double in a three-run fifth for Voorheesville, and hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the sixth. Nico Church had a double and single for the Blackbirds, and scored on both of Young’s hits.

Stillwater scored all of its runs in the first. Zach Baldwin and Liam Kane hit RBI singles.

Garrett Klahr hit a two-run single and Ben Cassillo hit a two-run double in a five-run third as Shaker and Chad Sinko downed Guilderland, 7-3, in a Class AA semifinal at Bruno Stadium.

Sinko hurled a four-hitter and struck out four, and contained a Guilderland team (No. 8, 11-12) that had won five in a row including a quarterfinal upset of top-seeded Columbia.

Nick Gavin and Tyler Oppelt had two-out, RBI singles in the first for Shaker (No. 4, 16-6).

Matt Bloise belted a solo home run, John Novenche went 3-for-4, and Greg Geisel and Will Hewitt combined on a three-hitter to lift Shenendehowa (No. 3, 19-3) over LaSalle (No. 2, 16-6) in the other Class AA semifinal, 10-0.

Matt Drum had a double and an RBI, Kyle McAlonie had two hits and an RBI and Justin Yurchak had two RBI for the Plainsmen. Shenendehowa and Shaker meet Friday at 7 at Bruno Stadium.

Charlie Peltz extended his scoreless innings streak to 36 with his fifth consecutive shutout, and and Reed Farrier and Erik Wattersten both had an RBI as Queensbury (No. 2, 17-5) posted a 2-0 Class A semifinal win over Troy (No. 3, 16-6) at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

Peltz gave up four hits, struck out 13 wnd walked two in boosting his personal log to 9-0. Reed hit an RBI single in the fourth and Wettersten had a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Joe Marasco had a double for the Spartans.

Scotia-Glenville (No. 4, 15-7) beat Lansingburgh (No. 1, 14-8) in the other Class A semifinal, 5-2.

Scotia-Glenville and Queensbury meet tonight at 7 at Bruno Stadium.

Joe Nellis pitched no-hit ball over the final six innings and knocked in three runs with two doubles and a single in Johnstown’s 8-1 Class B semifinal win over Hudson at Veterans Memorial Park.

Connor Rodecker had two doubles and two RBI for the Sir Bills (No. 6, 16-7), and Richie Lee added a pair of singles. Hudson (No. 7, 12-8) got a first-inning single from Darren Conti.

Johnstown and Schalmont

(No. 4, 18-4) play today at 4 at Bruno Stadium.
